Now, with several decades of experience under our belt the Long Island wine region and the North Fork of Long Island has grown into one of the most exciting up. The Merlot on Long Island has truly begun to show that it can produce highly enjoyable fine wine, and what's even better is that Long Island Merlots are starting to show a sense of place. Fast forward five years and now the red grape everyone is talking about is Merlot - and for good reason. Napa Valley and even Oregon wine countries date back to the 19th Century, and dont even try to compete with Tuscany or Bordeaux. There are approximately 90 wineries and vineyards on Long Island’s North Fork. I'm happy to see that trend has died away for the most part, as most of the Cab Franc tasted on the Island years ago were far too green and funky. Now, the part you have all been waiting for. Years ago, when I visited the North Fork, the grape on everyone's tongue was Cabernet Franc. Our efforts are focused on making dry, crisp, fun-to-drink wines that are full of distinct and. Our wines combine the traditional tastes of southern France with the distinct seaside style and agrarian history of the North Fork. An additional 16-acre parcel in Mattituck was purchased and planted in the late 1980s, but it wasn’t until the early ’90s, when we purchased 50. Croteaux is the only vineyard in the United States dedicated exclusively to making dry, fresh, fruity, rosé wines. Our first vines were planted on 24 acres in Peconic in 1983. From these three, the North Fork stands out with more than 30 wineries and a list of varietals that are being successfully turned from vine to wine. Ospreys Dominion is comprised of 90 acres of Carmenere, Pinot Gris, and Sauvignon Blanc in the heart of Peconic Long Island, New York. They are: Long Island, The North Fork of Long Island and The Hamptons, Long Island.

Long Island consists of three AVAs (American Viticultural Areas). Luckily, there are still a great deal of wine-producing regions in the United States that are not trying to just make another Californian style of wine, and the first that comes to my mind is Long Island. Harvest season provides offerings from land and sea including favorites such as Oysters and. Known as Long Island’s Wine Country, there are over 60 vineyards, breweries and distilleries using locally grown ingredients. And as much as I love these wines myself, there is great beauty in diversity. The country roads of the North Fork are lined with farm stands, quaint downtowns, charming B&Bs and waterfront properties. This history and popularity of California wine has left a mark on the minds and palates of most Americans, even to the point of foreign wine producers aiming for a more “American”-style of wine.

Of course, California’s winemaking history goes back more than two hundred years, with international recognition booming in the 70s and 80s, and the branding of Napa Valley now firmly secured. When people think of wine in the United States, their initial thoughts turn to California.
